City Shade Project
City Shade is a public/private collaboration to reforest Winona sponsored by Sustain Winona
City Shade is designing a plan to:
- Substantially increase Winona’s tree canopy
- Track tree cover, tree health, and species diversity across the City
- Maintain street trees throughout their lifecycles
- Increase community awareness about the multiple benefits of our urban forest
- Inform Winonans about tree care and engage them in planting and caring for trees
- Generate community support to continue improving the City’s urban forest
A well-planned, healthy urban forest
- Combats climate change through sequestering carbon
- Improves air quality
- Captures and cleans rainwater and reduces storm water run off
- Beautifies homes and neighborhoods
- Raises property values
- Saves energy use and costs
- Provides habitat for birds
- Enhances mental health and well-being
